Holiday movies.
Hide and Creep is a Thanksgiving movie. But there’s really only one clue in the movie to let you know that.
I’m not a big sports guy, but in Alabama (where I live, and where Hide and Creep is set), college football is wildly popular, and one of the biggest college games of the year is the Iron Bowl. That game pits the University of Alabama against Auburn University, two teams with legions of passionate fans.
But I’m not one of those fans, because, like I said, I’m just not a sports guy. But I thought having the movie take place on the weekend of a big regional sports event would give the movie some more local flavor.
I didn’t give much thought to the fact that the Iron Bowl always takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Honestly, I’m not sure I even realized that when I wrote the script. Hard to say for sure, because it was more than twenty (!) years ago. If I had given it more thought, I would have sprinkled in at least a few Christmas decorations. Because everybody might not have all their holiday stuff out on Black Friday, but a few folks will definitely have the tree trimmed and the stockings hung.
In my defense, several other people at least read some portion of the Hide and Creep screenplay, and none of them said, “hey, bro, if you’re going to do some Iron Bowl references, you need to do a few Thanksgiving references and maybe even a Christmas reference or two.”
The thing about making a feature film is that there is a lot to keep up with. You plan and you plan and you plan some more and you still miss things. I should make a list of random little things I just plain got wrong on Hide and Creep. (Another one that still bugs me — the “war on terror” was a big thing at the time, so I made some jokes about the Department of Homeland Security, but I called it the Department of Homeland Defense because I guess I wasn’t paying close attention to the news in those days.)
All that said, Hide and Creep is a Thanksgiving movie. The opening scene takes place on the night of Black Friday, 2004, and the rest of the movie plays out on Saturday November 27, 2004. The sequel to Hide and Creep, For a Few Zombies More, also takes place on Thanksgiving weekend, but it isn’t streaming anywhere at the moment. But if you want to celebrate the holiday with Hide and Creep, you can watch it right now on Tubi.
